Product Designer - UI Design & Design Systems
Job description
We are looking for a UI designer who will own and evolve our design system while bringing interfaces to life through thoughtful motion and interaction design. This role sits at the intersection of systems thinking and craft. You'll build the foundational infrastructure that enables our product teams to move fast while maintaining consistency, and you'll define the micro-interactions that make BookMyShow feel delightful and intuitive. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in Figma, someone who understands component architecture, design tokens, and variable-driven theming at a structural level. You should be comfortable building and documenting component libraries that scale across products and platforms, with a strong grasp of naming conventions, variant logic, and auto layout best practices. Beyond static components, you bring proficiency in motion and interaction design: the ability to define meaningful transitions, micro-interactions, and animation specifications that enhance user delight while maintaining performance and consistency. You should be able to articulate timing curves, duration standards, and interaction patterns in a way that developers can implement reliably. Experience collaborating with engineering teams to translate design system decisions into code-friendly documentation is essential. The candidate will have responsibilities across the following functions: Design System Ownership
- Own and evolve the BookMyShow design system components, tokens, patterns, and documentation.
- Build and maintain Figma component libraries with proper variant structures, auto layout, and variable bindings.
- Define and implement design token architecture using Figma variables, supporting theming and multi-platform consistency.
- Establish naming conventions, file organisation standards, and contribution guidelines for the design team.
- Create comprehensive documentation that enables designers and developers to use the system correctly.
- Conduct regular audits to ensure design system adoption and identify gaps or inconsistencies. Interaction and Motion Design:
- Design delightful micro-interactions that enhance the overall user experience and create memorable moments.
- Define motion principles, timing standards, and animation guidelines for the design system.
- Create interactive prototypes to communicate motion specifications to engineering teams.
- Collaborate with developers to ensure animations are implemented correctly and performantly.
- Balance delight with usability; ensure motion serves the user, not just aesthetics. Collaboration and Process:
- Partner with designers and engineers to define innovative solutions for product direction.
- Execute all visual design stages from concept to final hand-off to engineering.
- Share ideas early for feedback, be open to testing, and iterate rapidly.
- Present and defend designs and key milestone deliverables to peers and executive-level stakeholders.
- Contribute to research, both qualitative and quantitative, to inform design decisions.
- Document the process thoroughly. The core requirements for the job include the following: Design System Expertise:
- Proven experience building and maintaining design systems at scale, with a portfolio demonstrating component libraries, token architecture, and documentation.
- Expert-level proficiency in Figma, including Libraries, Components, Variants, Auto Layout, and Variables (modes, scoping, and aliasing).
- Strong understanding of design token methodology, primitive vs semantic tokens, naming conventions, and multi-platform token translation.
- Experience with design-to-code workflows and collaborating with engineering on component implementation.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design principles within design systems. Motion and Interaction Design:
- Demonstrable expertise in designing micro-interactions that enhance user delight, engagement, and clarity.
- Proficiency in prototyping tools for motion: Figma prototyping, Principle, After Effects, or similar.
- Ability to specify animation parameters (duration, easing curves, delays) in developer-friendly formats.
- Understanding of the performance implications of animations across web and mobile platforms.
- Strong sense of timing and rhythm, knowing when motion adds value vs when it creates friction. Core Design Skills:
- Relevant years of design experience in product companies with a focus on B2C applications.
- Excellent visual design skills with sensitivity to user-system interaction.
- A process-driven approach to creating wireframes, user flows, and interaction specifications.
- Ability to present designs and articulate system decisions to various stakeholders.
- Up-to-date with the latest UI trends, interaction patterns, and design system practices.
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development process.
